About: Barn Doors

While transforming The Shop into a residence, we wanted to maintain the character of the wooden slabs that used to inhabit the space and turn them into moments within the new program as a nod to the building's former use.

To celebrate the joinery and natural form of wood, we created two large ceremonial barn doors for our Shop project, to access key elements of the program.  These oversize doors were constructed onsite, and given ample time to adjust to the climate and settle before being wrangled into their final form.

We worked to source hardware that complemented the look and feel of the wood, but also allow for an ergonomic experience.

HARDWARE

LOCAL MATERIAL

We sourced black walnut locally, which allowed us to chose sequential slabs that could be book matched.

JOINERY

We merged modern methods of joinery with analog doweling techniques to stabilize the large doors.
